Night School

June 9, 2023 - August 19, 2023

WHAT
The exhibition highlights the Swedish artist’s new series of paintings depicting his ‘Night School’ – a whimsical space filled with sea snails, octopuses, slipper orchids, deer, cats, flutes, and more. The dream-like images reference inner worlds of subconsciousness. In addition, the artist uses rigid wooden panels to create his collages and moves cut-out characters and objects – made of vinyl or cardboard – between different paintings. Therefore, characters are recurring throughout different works. This allows the paintings to be seen as interconnected, with characters depicted as gazing at other paintings, or even at the audience.

WHY
In the paintings, animals and plants are equally important as humans. In fact, the humans seem to only gain new knowledge through their encounters with the animals and plants. These quirky depictions of nature are present as motifs throughout the exhibition. For example, the octopus, present in many paintings, symbolises extreme flexibility; furthermore, orchids are also a recurring motif, and symbolise decay, mystery, and eroticism. Audiences are sure to be intrigued by the fairy-tale-like creatures, unusual motifs, and peculiar symbols in this unique presentation.
