WHAT
The exhibition – consisting of just under two hundred pieces of furniture and design objects produced between 1981 and 1985 – makes its first appearance in China after its 2022 Milan debut. With the support of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Shanghai, the exhibition features a multitude of designers and showcases the history of Memphis Milano. Audiences are transported to Memphis group’s first exhibition in 1981, with a homage to two of the brand’s first collectors – David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld.

WHY
The exhibition is meant to be more than a historical record of the brand – it is meant to draw attention to the possibilities of design that go beyond marketing. This follows from the brand’s founding ideals of forging design with architecture. The designers were each free to design what they pleased without any restrictions, further highlighting the brand’s values. This very culmination of creatives makes the exhibition one that cannot be missed.
