Memory, Playfulness, and Stream of Consciousness

February 16, 2022 - March 16, 2022

WHAT

A group show featuring six international artists, the works are colourful, surreal, and invite contemplation.

Nona Garcia’s distinct realist style invites us to take note of mundane items often ignored, establishing a dichotomy that opens up a novel conversation,

Zhang Ben’s paintings are arranged into complex and precise visual orders, and these in turn inform the rhetoric of his paintings.

Cameron Platter delights in absurd designs, but beneath the playfulness he addresses the dangerous undercurrents of our times, such as capitalism, conspiracy, and colonialism, to name a few.

Gao Yu’s works are metaphors; their titles are often puns, which connect to his response to and interrogation of his current circumstances.

Yang Na’s surrealist paintings depict an extraordinary, fantastical dreamworld that incorporates her emotions and consciousness, giving way to the possibilities that could occur in a stream of consciousness.

Rodel Tapaya’s process of editing pictorial elements requires the careful combination of numerous pictorial fragments and the selection of imitated objects, which he finally transforms into an allegory for human civilization.

WHY

The title ‘Memory, Playfulness, and Stream of Consciousness’ is aptly appropriate. Through works that are haunting, surreal, and even fantastical, the exhibition provides a channel in letting us dive deeper into our own subconsciousness, and to discover different ways of seeing.
