La vie Moderne
WHAT
The exhibition is a partnership between the museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. The French photographer and filmmaker’s first solo in China is a showcase of a hundred photographs and one feature film – sharing his simple, frontal approach. He projects a humanistic view of the world by building relationships and allowing others to speak, keeping the subject in the central position. A farmer’s son, Depardon reinvents landscape photography by alternating between black and white and colour photographs to reflect his personal ties to the French countryside.
WHY
The exhibition is rooted in the artist’s relationship with the Fondation Cartier, spanning over thirty years. The relationship blossomed from a shared vision of the issues and challenges of our contemporary society, and has grown through a multitude of joint projects. Additionally, Fondation Cartier conserves 570 of the artist’s photographs. Audiences are encouraged to view one of the many fruits of this relationship in the artist’s China debut.
