JU MING TAICHI SERIES

March 1, 2023 - May 31, 2023

WHAT
The renowned Taiwanese sculptor (b.1938) was trained as a woodcarver, apprenticed to Lee Chinchuan as a teenager. He developed his skill and applied it to a range of media, including bronze, styrofoam, ceramics, and stainless steel. His most famous series, ‘Tai Chi’, has been exhibited in many countries, and is well-received by both art enthusiasts and those interested in Tai Chi. It features sculptures of figures performing Tai Chi, a Chinese martial art that emphasises balance and harmony.

WHY
The sculptures themselves are made from materials such as bronze and steel, and are known for their boxy, minimalist style. The intrinsic balancing power underlying Tai Chi movements are pinned at a specific moment by the sculptures. The exhibition has taken many forms, ranging from temporary outdoor displays to monumental sculptures, to showcase the beauty of Tai Chi and its importance in Chinese culture.
