The renowned German artist’s second solo show at the gallery’s Hong Kong location is a presentation of new paintings, following his 2021 exhibition at the New York location. Widely celebrated as one of the most influential figurative painters working today, the artist is known for richly-coloured and elaborate paintings that contain a repertoire of invented characters, settings, objects, and motifs. At once realistic and familiar, enigmatic and inscrutable, his paintings often hint at broader narratives and histories – seemingly reconnecting with the artistic traditions of realism.
The artist has been represented by the gallery since 2000, and has exhibited internationally on countless occasions. His works are characterised by complementary colours and the combination of organic and non-organic elements. Perhaps one of the most recognizable features in his work is his use of scale – as subjects seem to be depicted in unnatural sizes in relation to each other. This proceeds to give the viewer a sense that the subjects exist on different planes of time and space.
