WHAT
The immersive exhibition marks a defining moment in the eminent artist’s practice and opens doors to a greater public understanding of Chinese calligraphy. The range of works presented include a monumental ‘Entangled Script’, 2 ‘Tea Poems by Su Shi’ measuring 5 m. long, and a set of calligraphies written on transparent coloured acrylic. In collaboration with media artist, Jeffrey Shaw, a special feature of two video installations is included. The videos capture Wang Dongling’s writing process, and translate the dance of the writing brush into a ritual performance.

WHY
Contemporary calligraphy today has departed from the classical kind that is rooted in refined cultivation or classical learning. It is also practised in modern times, far removed from the days when the brush was a daily tool. Today’s historical mission recovers a deeper appreciation of the tradition of calligraphy from within the field of ‘art’.
