Clare Woods: Between These Words
Originally trained as a sculptor, the British painter artist is particularly concerned with how forms exists with space. This understanding of sculptural language and a preoccupation with forms in space, translated into two-dimensional images, underpins her artistic practice. This time, Woods presents a series of still life and figurative paintings that explores the polarity of opposites and that embraces desire, as the ultimate space to express the human condition. This is the artist’s second show in Hong Kong.
An exhibition about the human condition and what we are capable of, much of Woods’s recent practice is concerned with fragility and vulnerability as the artist asks us to look between imagery and representation in search for hidden notions beneath the ambiguous surfaces. Focusing on object’s fragility and vulnerability, mortality and disability, Woods’s subtle and surreal images connect the viewer with subconscious states of mind.
