Childhood in Ceramic
WHAT WE KNOW
The 3 artists presented all hail from Taiwan: Ah Leon (Chen Ching-Liang) was born in 1953, and his works employ the trompe l’oeil method to mimic the natural world via the manipulation of clay. His artful craftmanship focusing on the spirit of Chinese culture brings to viewers an unusual visual experience. Lee Chin-Sheng was born in 1962, and his works depict the simple life of the country as seen through children’s activities. In 2014, Lee suffered from myocardial infarction, which led to severe amnesia and dementia; the exhibition features works from before the illness. Leo Tang (Tang Shou-Nam) was born 1966, and is highly-respected as an illustrator of children’s books. It was over 10 years ago that Tang started branching out as a solo contemporary artist, and in 2016, he also presented his first series of ceramic works.
WHY WE LOVE IT
There’s something about ceramic figurines that draw out joyful and innocent childhood memories. If you’re a fan, you’ll love these 35 pieces. Sculpted from clay with skill, tactile craftmanship as well as love, the exhibition is as playful as it is heart-warming.
