Antony Gormley

October 6, 2021 - October 30, 2022

WHAT

Renowned for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that explore the relationship between the human body and space, the exhibition draws on a range of Antony Gormley’s traditions and ideas, including Buddhist sculpture and philosophy, minimalism and quantum physics. Often casting his own body as a base, he develops his works using a variety of forms and materials that provoke questions about how humans relate to nature and the cosmos. In addition to a new site-specific installation, the show is complemented by three sculptures placed around the museum, which present defining aspects of his extensive study of the human body.

WHY

The artist’s works encourage viewers to focus their attention on their own movement and perception in relation to the surrounding space. For example, ‘Horizon Field Singapore’ at the Ng Teng Fong Roof Garden Gallery stands at almost five metres tall and spans the garden gallery. It invites visitors to walk through a vast matrix of intersecting aluminium rings, allowing them to co-create the experience by stepping through the rings. His other works are placed at key locations throughout the Gallery, forming a sequence of what he calls ‘acupuncture points’ within the architecture, activating their surroundings and provoking connections with their audience.
