WHAT
The first exhibition at the museum since the end of the zero-COVID policy in China is also the New York-based artist’s (b.1986) first solo exhibition with the museum. Known for their technically complex yet ethereal works, the artist blends poetics and cybernetics in multi-layered paintings, installations, and video. In collaboration with a design studio, WangShui created an immersive architectural intervention that spans the fourth and fifth floors; on the top floor of the chamber, the artist presents a new series of paintings that depict otherworldly figures and encounters.

WHY
Centred around eight aluminium floor paintings that move around during the show, whose movements are determined by an invisible algorithm, the exhibition expands upon the artist’s artistic research into alternative modes of collaboration and unexpected ways of integrating different agents. This exhibition is also innovative by incorporating technology (including AI) as well as challenging long-standing western painting traditions by abrading images onto the surfaces of aluminium panels.
