The Thread is Not Straight
WHAT
The latest group exhibition at the gallery includes the works of international and locally-based artists, who all work innovatively within the media of textile and painting to show a complex array of personal and political narratives. Several of the featured artists challenge the gendered female association with material, textile and thread; Cristina Camacho and IV Chan specifically use these to explore their own female identity, bodies and relationships. Other artists include include Diedrick Brackens, Ip Wai Lung, Josie Love Roebuck, Judy Ledgerwood, and Marie Hazard.
WHY
The materiality of these works allows for a more visceral interaction to both the works themselves and the themes which lie underneath. By using the ‘Pattern and Decoration’ movement as a blueprint, see how these artists approached art-making as they rebelled against the staid norms that dominate the cultural landscape; as those who were traditionally on the periphery, they challenge the predefined codes of what is normal or ‘straight’.
