The Female Gaze

March 21, 2023 - May 13, 2023

WHAT
The exhibition is part of the programme highlights celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Goethe-Institut in Hong Kong. In this presentation, six female artists from Berlin and Leipzig were invited to share their perspectives in addressing the question of the female gaze in art. In their paintings and sculptures, they explore body images and sensuality, address relationships and memories, and question traditional as well as contemporary gender roles. The 26 selected artworks are as bold as they are diverse, to showcase a kaleidoscope of female identities that confidently confronts the gaze of our world.

WHY
In art history, the phrase the ‘male gaze’ refers to the act of depicting women from a masculine, heterosexual perspective that presents women as objects for the pleasure of the male viewer. The ‘feminine gaze’ then is perhaps an ever-changing quest of self-discovery in the case of these six artists. The exhibition addresses how women balance not only power and sensuality, but fragility and strength. The selection of representative female positions of contemporary art from Germany is the first of its kind to be presented at the gallery.
