March 10, 2023 - July 30, 2023

WHAT
The antiques exhibition traces the evolution of blue-and-white ceramics by displaying a series of porcelain works across the Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644), and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, during which time they gained huge popularity. Audiences have the chance to explore the evolution of this beautiful colour scheme, which has always been popular around the world, via the items displayed such as chargers, bowls, dishes, and vases.

WHY
Chinese potters had been producing coveted blue and white objects for over a millennium. Originally, cobalt was used to make the blue pigment, which was painted over an off-white ceramic clay. As technology and materials improved, the ceramics became more refined and white. The kilns grew in size, allowing for larger objects to be produced, which added value to the Yuan dynasty tradition of decorating this now world-famous particular colour scheme. Discover how the technique has evolved while still honouring tradition, with more modern designs, clearer colours, and defined lines.
