Orupabo-Ka Zenzile-Ndzube-Niki Nkosi Group Show

January 14, 2023 - February 25, 2023

WHAT
The group exhibition is brought to the gallery as a result of the exchange of programming with Stevenson Gallery in Amsterdam. As a result, Hong Kongers have the opportunity to see the works of 4 incredible artists, all of whom are debuting in Hong Kong for the first time. The artists all originate from different places from Eastern Cape to Norway to the United States, but are able to find commonalities in their experiences in the world and their discussions of colonisation and imperialism through a multitude of mediums, from video to paintings to photographs. Each presents artworks that articulate the key concerns of their respective practices.

WHY
Each of these artists on their own convey their messages quite strongly, articulating the key concerns of their respective practices. Orupabo’s works discuss questions related to race, sexuality, and violence in regards to black people in the form of video, sculpture, and collage. Ka Zenzile’s paintings discuss decolonising visual items and focus on isiXhosa modalities by using cow dung and oil paints as his mediums. Ndzube’s paintings reference flamboyant mysticism and magical realism that move between folklore and township vernacular. Last but not least, by using sport in her figurative paintings as an allegory for power relations, Niki Nkosi evaluates history and depicts imperialism.
