Here Comes the Sun

March 20, 2023 - June 17, 2023

WHAT
A solo presentation by the New York-based artist (b. 1939), the exhibition is a display of large-scale paintings and works on paper conceived between 1963–1974 that reflects the artist’s personal interest in the spirituality, aesthetics and traditions of Asia. During the artist’s years as an active female painter, she pivoted her own artistic path that was different from the predominant post-war American art of her time in the 1960s and 1970s. More importantly, trained in ballet, she approached movement in body as a form of mediation, which she applied to her painting technique.

WHY
The artist’s study of ballet and travels to East and South Asia inspired her to create artworks with her subconsciousness and imagination. For example, the artist’s colour-saturated palette that invokes elusive, abstract forms is influenced by traditional Indian art, while vertically-composed works such as ‘Chromatic Cascade I, II, IV ’are reminiscent of Chinese landscape ink paintings and Japanese calligraphic works. Additionally her ballet training influenced her painting techniques, where she applied acrylic paint onto an uneven surface and allowed it to drip downwards to depict movements.
