Crossing the Void

November 4, 2020 - January 15, 2021

WHAT WE KNOW

Born in France in 1955 and now living in Spain, Laurent Martin “Lo” is a bamboo sculptor; however, his relationship with bamboo did not start until 1998 when he fell in love with the plant at first sight. He has since researched bamboo on 2 separate journeys through Southeast Asia, East Asia and Central America. He understands their natural inclinations as well as their spiritual potencies.

WHY WE LOVE IT

Laurent Martin ‘Lo’ knows almost everything about bamboo. His total of 12 new works exemplify his skill in creating a delicate equilibrium through bamboo sculpture. He explores the plant’s versatility and strength, as well as its limitations and weaknesses. The sensational balance and harmony in the curves, spirals and shadows can be felt throughout.

This is ‘Lo’’s 1st solo exhibition in Hong Kong. Gallery director Katie de Tilly describes his sculpture as ‘the essence of all life as one’, praising his passion, intuition, and mastery. ‘Lo’ himself describes Hong Kong as ‘flexible and strong, patient and spirited, poetic and technological’… just like bamboo.
