Botticelli & his Times

October 23, 2020 - March 10, 2021

WHAT
As part of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Series, the Hong Kong Museum of Art partnered with the Uffizi Galleries in Florence to bring and showcase a total of 42 works from the Italian Renaissance. Sandro Botticelli’s art is primarily featured alongside other Renaissance masters such as Filippo Lippi and Piero del Pollaiolo.

WHY
This exhibition condenses the zeitgeist of the Renaissance, a cross-field movement that truly began in Florence, stemmed in the exploration of classical Roman and Greek cultures. In the arts, Renaissance artists emphasised humanist ideals through dissecting the human form and their relationship with religion, paying homage to their predecessors.

Aside from religious paintings, many portraits of the upper-class during the Renaissance era are also presented. They illustrate the unique relationship between artists and patrons. One that might ring a bell is the Medici name, a family who gained glory and fame in this pivotal era. If you are looking to take a break from contemporary art, this exhibition is not to be missed. Brace yourself for a trip back in time and across the world.
