Becoming Harmonious: The Art of Li Hongwei
WHAT
Curated by Wang Wei, this is the China-based artist’s first solo exhibition in a Chinese museum. The exhibition features over twenty works, including sculptures and installations from a number of his previous series, from ‘Allegory of Balance’ to ‘Upwelling of Gravity’. Along with these past works, the exhibition also features pieces from his latest works from the ‘Beyond the Height’, ‘Futurism’, and ‘The Origin’ series. Li also continuously employs fired porcelain and stainless steel. Together, they add to the depth of the exhibition.
WHY
Although Li was born in China and is now based in Beijing, he studied in both China as well as in New York, thus giving him a dual perspective of the world and a number of new avenues of art exploration. Some of the main ideas of Li’s works are interconnection, opposition, transformation, and symbiotic relationships. These words find their ties to the unique human experience; as viewers explore the different works from Li’s career, they might find something that symbolises their own experience in a way that they haven’t seen before.
